To the Teacher -

There are no detailed instructions, vocabulary lists or guide lines of how best to use this unit. I suggest that you have a lead-in on the particular subject that you have chosen to deal with. This can be in the form of

bulletbrainstorming
bulleta given vocabulary list
bulletdiscussion
bulletthe use of pictures
bulleta video film
bulletHeadlines on subject
bulletEnglish and/or Hebrew newspaper articles
bulleta guest; a Holocaust survivor OR a student from your school who has been to Poland
bullettransparencies e.g. Martin Gilbert (Maps), Pillar of Fire, etc.

This is a very sensitive subject and your students may not wish to express their feelings in a foreign language. The teacher will be presenting and answering in English. If the students prefer to talk in Hebrew, let them.

Let your students bring relevant songs and reading materials to class. These will probably be in Hebrew. Use them as a trigger for your English lesson (vocabulary, translation, discussion, ...).

This should not be a regular English lesson. Do NOT use the material as you would for your regular Reading Comprehension lesson, Essays, Cloze Exercises, etc.

Never think there is an easy way to make an end to
such bitter memories. Never think there is a way to
forgive the hate in the human heart or an easy way
to believe that the worst has occurred and is past.
Only know that hope lives when people remember.
Simon Wiesenthal
