Walt Whitman (1819 - 1892)

Cut into strips, place in envelopes and have the students rearrange in the correct order

Walt Whitman was born in New York from mixed Dutch and Yankee ancestors.

In 1830 he left school and started working as a printer.

He worked as a school teacher for some years, then a journalist and from 1846 - 1847 editor of a New York newspaper, called the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

He was a lazy editor and so soon found himself out of a job.

From 1851 till 1854 he worked as a carpenter in Brooklyn during which time he kept a notebook.

This notebook later became his first bundle of poetry.

During the Civil War Whitman worked in the hospital of Washington, nursing the wounded.
 

O Captain! My Captain!

In this lament, Whitman begins by addressing President Lincoln who had been assassinated in 1865, just after the Union victory in the American Civil War.

O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done,

The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won,

The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,

While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;

But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red,

Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! My Captain! rise up and hear the bells;

Rise up - for you the flag is flung - for you the bugle trills,

For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths - for you the shores acrowding,

For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;

Here Captain! dear father! The arm beneath your head!

It is some dream that on the deck, You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,

My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,

The ship is anchored safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,

From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won:

Exult O shores, and ring O bells!

But I with mournful tread, Walk the deck my Captain lies,

Fallen cold and dead.
