Shaar Haarayot
(Lions Gate)
In the 1500s, the Sultan Suleiman dreamt that lions came to
him and told him to build a wall around Jerusalem. After three years he finished
this great work, and decorated this gate with lions, believing that they would protect his
city. It was through this gate that the Israeli army entered and liberated the Old City
during the Six-Day War of 1967, and today, Jews, Arabs, and Christian pilgrims flow freely
through it.
