On May 23, 1960, Adolf Eichmann, one of the main organizers of the Nazi
extermination program during World War II, was brought to Israel to stand trial. In the
trial, which opened in April 1961, Eichmann was found guilty of crimes against humanity
and the Jewish people, and was sentenced to death. After the rejection of his appeal to
the Supreme Court, he was hanged on May 30, 1962. It was the only time that the death
