Use the following passage as an introductory discussion about The Holocaust.

The journey from East Warsaw station to Treblinka sometimes lasts for five hours and forty-five minutes. Sometimes it can last a whole lifetime.

The station is small with three fir trees and a regular notice that informs you that this is Treblinka. There is no office and no porter and even for a million you won't get a return ticket. No one is waiting at the station and no one is waving a scarf. You are greeted by a stillness hanging in the air in this closed wasteland.

The station pillar and the fir trees are worn away as is the black notice that this is Treblinka station. Still hanging is the advertisement sign which says: "COOK ONLY WITH GAS."

* Discuss Treblinka and the other camps.

* What is different about this railway station in

comparison to others that you are familiar with?

* After the discussion play a recording of the song -

התחנה הקטנה טרבלינקה to be found on the disc

Ashes and Dust / Yehuda Poliker.

Ask students to compare the written text to the

song's introductory words.
