  Working with a picture

Materials:

A reproduction of an emotive painting or photograph.

Select an emotive photo or a copy of a painting that is connected to the subject that you wish to introduce. Make enough photocopies or a clear transparency.

In Class:

Brainstorm vocabulary with the class.

Brainstorm what feelings the picture evokes.

Give the picture to one of the students and tell him/her to describe it to the class.

Encourage comments from the class. Do they agree (or disagree) with the description? What information can they add to the first account so as to give a clearer or more accurate interpretation.

If the picture makes a specific point, it may be possible to use it as a starting point for further discussion.

A good source for black and white photos can be found in the book by Yigal Lossin, тоег дащ Pillar of Fire
