July 1st, 2004
Dear REEDers
I have a number of teachers who have applied for teaching positions. If your
school is still in need of a teacher for next year please send me an email
tsuravi@hotmail.com and include the
following information
1. name of school
2. name of contact person PLUS email address
3. how many hours
Please remember that any new teacher that your school is planning to accept
MUST be interviewed and approved by your Regional English Inspector (me).
enjoy your vacation
Avi
We have posted information on an
interesting in-service course from the American Embassy hishtalmut on ETNI:
www.boker.org.il/eng/etni/ushishtalmut.htm
This is a messaage that needs your
immediate attention!!
Pupils who wish to participate in the CROSSING BORDERS project are invited to an
interview which will be held:
1/ Qiryat Bialik - May 24
(11:00-15:00)
2/ Tel Aviv - May 30
(10:30)
3/ Beer Sheva - May 31 (11:00)
The interview is for pupils who are completing 9th
and 10th grade and want to participate (quality time) in all that concerns
CROSSING BORDER issues, etc. This means two weeks of ENGLISH in Demark all
expenses paid. Having done something similar two months ago in Turkey (our
course was for 4 days)
I can HIGHLY RECOMMEND this project for your pupils!!!!!!
see: http://www.crossingborder.org
I need your reply YESTERDAY. I can fax more information to schools interested.
For more details send me your name, the name of the school and the fax number.
At the same time send a list of pupils/s interested as I must organize the
timing of the interview.
The Bagrut exam is over, so now's the time to think of other things.
Avi
It has come to my attention that
there are still problems with the LD
recomendations.
1. Please make sure that when any decisions about your pupils are made - you are
part of the process (too late for this year, but in the future)!!!
2. It is the schools responsibility to find qualified teachers for the ORAL
(written) Bagrut Examination
3. A mix-up between "SHEATUK" and "HAKLATAT TSHUVOT"
(pages 29 and 30 - yellow covered bulletin of the Chief Inspector, Summer 2004
also to be found on ETNI)
If your school ORDERED "sheatuk" and this is the sticker that will be
placed on the kids exam booklet, then s/he cannot do the other format. It
depends entirely on what was ordered for the student (according to (a) YOUR
recomendations (b) the "ivchun" and (c) in accordance with how your
student practised, etc.
Please make sure that you are familiar with the procedure. All the
information can be found in Judy's BULLETIN. It is very clear and I suggest you
share it with the authorities at your school.
Wishing you and your students all the best for the coming exam.

Dear REEDers
This is a reminder that you must submit a list of your pupils who will be doing
the 1 hour exam (oral). This list MUST be submitted on official school paper
(not email), it should be typed out clearly in HEBREW (not your task, the school
has a secretary), and must include the following details - alongside the Name of
the pupil, Name of the tester (The tester must be a highschool English teacher,
not the kids class teacher.) In the old format, a tester can test a maximum of 4
pupils.
Many schools have already received my approval. Those who have not as yet
submitted their request should do so NOW. Remember, I am not at the office every
day and suggest you don't wait till the last minute. Not all requests are given
approval - take this into account.
Form 13 (the oral bagrut "interview and cue cards") must be sent to my
office.
Your school should have received a color-format of the Modular Bagrut schedule
for the 18th. This form will soon be posted on ETNI
I have been receiving phone-calls from "yoatzot" who want to know how
pupils are (can be) tested in English. Please make sure that YOU and those
responsible at your school are familiar with the document that can be found on
ETNI (Bagrut information) - Accommodations for LD Pupils for the Bagrut Exams
My office fax number is 03-6898793. For any clarifications, phone
me. 050-6221474 (the best time to get hold of me is in the evenings.
Wishing you and especially all your pupils the very best for this exam.

Dear REED ers,
I am writing to you about the English day that I'm organizing in Kadoorie. You
are all invited to come and join us on that day if you can.
Here are the details: The English day is based on the topic: English speaking
countries and is done only with and for the 9th graders (about 200
pupils).
We have 8 groups in the 9th grade so each group chose a country, worked on it
(they have to prepare a portfolio about the specific subject that they chose, to
prepare visuals - a poster, a powerpoint presentation, prepare activities
on the information they present and present it orally to the mates in their
group first). Then every group has to build in the room where they
usually study a center which presents everything they learned about their
country. This is done the day before the English day. The English day itself is
divided into three parts:
1) an opening show, organized by the pupils : 8:20-8:45
2) visits to the studying centers: 8:45-10:45.
3) a show - 3 singers sing and play country songs and then they organize dancing
to country music - excellent!!!
We sent invitations to schools in the north and we"ll be happy to have
visitors on that day-Wednesday,March 10th,2004,
hope to see you,
Pnina

Dear REEDers Shalom
This is a call to all of our schools who are organizing/having special
ENGLISH DAYS (plays, debates, happenings, ....) and are willing to invite
teachers to visit/learn. Many of our schools do so many wonderful
activities and we can all benefit from seeing, experiencing and participating.
The Minhal has always worked as "family" and it is in this spirit that
I
call upon you to open your doors. Please send the necessary information to Gail
- gail@etni.org
and she will paste the message on REED. Many thanks

you wish to receive copies please email me and stipulate how many copies you
want. (Maximum of 20 per school.)

Dear REEDers,
Since May this year, Marsha Hachmon and Avi Tsur have been enriching us,
via emails, with the words of Janusz Korczak. Not only have they kept his
teachings alive on-line, they have also offered a hishtalmut during the school
breaks.
At the
request of Miriam Greif, Avi conducted an in-service training at Dror school
which was nothing less than inspiring! Miriam's exceptional organizational
skills and warm hospitality combined with Avi's knowledge of and dedication to
Korczak made those study days a remarkable experience.
I am using this list as a medium to
publicly express my gratitude to those who continue to educate us so that we are
more qualified to educate others. Thank you Marsha, Miriam and Avi.
Below, I have included the wording of
the card which the 'mishtalmeem' wrote for Avi.
-Cindy
Let us work together: let
us
educate ourselves together, ...
Janusz Korczak, "The Society" 1910
Dear Avi,
Participation in this hishtalmut certainly mirrors these words of Korczak.
Throughout the course, you have created an atmosphere conducive to learning and
sharing. You have shared your knowledge and understanding of a most remarkable
man while encouraging us to experience his teachings.
Your dedication and contribution to the field of education is appreciated
greatly by those you have inspired. By being a living-model of his
teachings, your actions allow Korczak's legacy to be reborn in the modern
classroom and continue to the next generation.
Thank you for carrying on with such an important mission.
Your fellow educators

Dear REEDers Shalom
This is a final reminder about the ORAL BAGRUT for this year.
There are two formats - 12th graders are to be tested as in the past
(Interview and Cue Cards)
10th and 11th gradesr are to be tested according to the new Ministry
regulations (see Bulletin 2 on ETNI)
This is my parting message to the CUE CARD format.
Testers are reminded that it is their responsibilty to arrive at the school with
a clear set of typed cue cards (and not to use the available ones of the
school). The pupil is asked to choose 2 cards, reads them (or tester reads
them - kids with dispensations) and chooses ONE of the TWO on which s/he asks
about 10 questions. The pupil must start with one of these 2 cards however can
ask the tester for another card. The same procedure is followed, the pupil
chooses two cards and decides which of the two s/he wishes to be tested on. THE
PUPIL IS NOT PENALIZED for making a second choice - it is his/her right.
and with this final note it is goodbye to this part of bagrut assessment.
You may want to hold on to your cards and use them on a rainy day in class. This
is still a fine way of having your students converse (pair work, etc.)
I HIGHLY SUGGEST THAT YOU PRINT THIS MESSAGE WHICH CAN BE PRESENTED TO THE
TESTER IF S/HE IS TESTING IN SOME OTHER FASHION.

Dear REEDers,
All the info you need for the summer bagrut and oral exams appears in the latest
bulletin sent out by Judy Steiner (February 2004) which should arrive at school
in the coming weeks.
The
bulletin has also been posted on ETNI and is linked from the front page of REED.
Please take special notice which forms and scales you need for the oral bagrut
existing format and which for the new Tzvira format.

department.
This message also pertains to those of you who have already emailed me about not
receiving your ktav minui.

Dear REEDers
A very special session on Korczak will be held at Dror Highschool On
February 2nd. The session will be from 15:00 till 17:30. It will be entirely
in HEBREW and Itschak Belfer (a graduate of the orphanage) will be our very
special guest of honour and will answer any and all questions. At this
session we will also be showing a documentary film in which Itschak is one
of the "stars." If you can, be there. You may want to inform
other teachers
at your school (not necessarily English teachers) who will I am sure find
this a well worth while session to attend.
Agudat Korczak has kindly agreed to have their books on sale at half price
and some even less. All of the books are in Hebrew. Please advise your
librarian as this is a chance not to miss.
If you do intend to attend YOU MUST REGISTER. The convenor is Miriam Greif mgreif@zahav.net.il

Dear REEDers
having received a number of emails on this subject, this then is the
official answer to the question -
Will schools be receiving an answer key with which to check the one-hour
exam?
NO! The Ministry trusts the English teacher of the school to calculate the
grade of the particular student without the official answer-key. This was
the procedure in the past (except for last year which proved to be
problematic).

Dear colleagues
This is a final reminder that all pupils taking the old bagrut format are to
be tested according to the old format
Please note:
The 4 and 5 point pupils are to be tested on CUE CARDS that the TESTER
brings to the test and NOT cue cards that the school pre-prepares for the
festive occasion. The Cue Cards are to be clearly TYPED and uniform in size
and color.
Wishing us all Chag Sameach and for the Christian teachers amongst us, a
Merry Xmas.

Dear REEDers
Please read this message to the end as it relates to a number of subjects:
1) Ktav Minui
2) Contacting your testers
3) Old and new format Bagrut
4) One hour oral exam
5) Etni and official answers
The final shibbutz has been sent to the testing department and so they will be
sending out the Ktav Minui (hopefully) soon. PLEASE NOTE: I do not have any
influence on when this will be sent, so please don't email me as I cannot be of
any help.
You cannot test until you have received the official forms from Jerusalem! You
can be in contact with the school coming to test your pupils for initial
arrangements, etc. PLEASE DO NOT ask Gail or me for telephone numbers, etc. This
comes with the Ktav Minui. If you need telephone numbers you can ask the
secretary of your school (they normally have all the numbers); or You can use
the telephone directory; or You can phone the secretary of the Minhal (Lilach or
Marta) and ask them for the school's number. You can then ask the school for the
coordinator.
12th graders will be tested according to the old format and assessed
according to last year's grading grid. 11th grade pupils who have received
approval to take the WINTER exam, take the old format.
Pupils of all other levels taking the Summer exam will be tested according to
the modules. For example: 5 point pupils will take Modules E and F. (Their oral
exam is in line with the NBA handbook)
I am now switching to the written exam.
All 12th graders are doing the old format examination. (Winter and Summer)
This is a reminder that for pupils who are being tested orally (the one hour
exam) the school needs the approval of the regional inspector (ME, AVI TSUR).
This request must be sent to my office well in advance and not a day or two
prior to the exam!!! The request must be IN HEBREW and must contain the
following information. Name of pupil + ID and the teacher who will be testing
the pupil. According to Ministry regulations, the English teacher testing cannot
be the pupils teacher (this must be stated on the request) and a tester cannot
test more than 4 pupils. (From my experience 3.) It is the school's
responsibility to find the correct amount of testers. The pupils are not allowed
to receive a copy of the exam while they are waiting for their turn.
If you have any questions about the bagrut please ask your inspector before
sending a message to ETNI, some of the answers given there are far from official
policy and can be misleading.
Please take your time when reading this message and be in touch with me for any
clarifications

Dear colleagues,
This is to remind you that the next session at Dror was postponed to December
8th.
All other dates remain the same.
Looking forward to seeing you there,

Dear REEDers, Dear teachers, Dear
MERAKZIM Shalom
A few schools have written to inform us about minor mistakes that we made with
the shibutz and so we are making slight changes here and there. Please pay
attention and for this coming week check if your shibbutz has been changed.
Today was an experience I really want us all to share. Gail and I started
placing the testers so that the document could be sent in to the Testing
Department on time. We did not finish the job, could not finish the job and NO,
the document will not be submitted on time (I have asked for an extension.)
The story is as follows. On form 1, at least half of the schools did not
fill in "Semel Hamossad." As I was not at the office I had no access
to
these numbers. So half the day was wasted going back to historical documents
searching for the "semel." Then we had the problem of TOOOOOOOO
many of you who entered your information on the data-base IN ENGLISH even though
you were clearly asked to fill the form in, in Hebrew(the official language of
Israel, the only language that the Testing Department accepts). We still have to
translate dozens of entries - we didn't have the time to do that today. And
finally - form 1 was sent in with names of possible testers but these people
aren't on the data-base. Again we went to last year's lists and lists from
previous years and managed to get some of your details. We even took the time to
phone a number of schools, the secretaries were very helpful but I found it so
time-consuming, so distasteful, such a waste of our time that after a while
discontinued with this procedure.
The following is a list of testers who have not filled in their data-base
form. If we do not receive the information immediately, the coordinator will be
sent to test 3, 4 or whatever amount of times needed.
Not on database -
Alonei Yizhak - Ruth Mann - 3 points
Beer Tuvia - Yochi Katrin - 4/5 - Dov going instead
Beit Yhuda - David Simmons - 3
Brener - Anat Yefet - 3 points
Brener - Marie Ruiz 4/5
Brener - Lev Avramov 4/5
Eshel Hanasi - Rada Goldfeder 3,4
Eshel hanasi - Galia Shaulov 3,4
Eshel Hanasi - Haya Shamir
Gaon Hayarden - Heidi Shoham 3
Hadassim - Tami Karni 3
Herzog - Shulamit Dekel 4
Havat Hanoar Hatzioni - Rina Hadani 3, Dolly Yahel 4,5
Ulpanat Lehava - Michal Pinchasi 3
Ort Yami Ashdod - Ronit Rosenberg
Ramot Hefer - Juliet Aharoni
Karnei Shomron - Janet Berkeley 4/5
Susiya - Menachem Weiss 3
Merchavim - Alfasi Sagit 3, Yehuda Smadar 3,
Maaleh Shacharut - Sandrin 3
Yarden - Anita Hasson 3, 4/5

Dear REEDers Shalom
We are pleased and proud to be able to announce that the Oral Bagrut Shibutz
can be found on REED.
Please note that this is an UNOFFICIAL document. The official document will be sent directly to the schools and testers from the Testing department.
* It is up to the school to set suitable dates with their respective
testers.
* You are requested to set up the dates according to your needs. If you have a few pupils doing the winter bagrut and they need to be tested soon, either
have them go/travel to one of the listed testers who is willing to test them (not on account of coming as a tester to your school) OR add some pupils who
you know are ready and willing to be tested as a group now. (REMEMBER: the pupils take the test once only and there is no possibility of retaking the
test at a later stage.) If neither of these set-ups works, contact me by email with all the necessary information.
* Further (written) details will be sent soon from the main office in
Jerusalem.
I take this opportunity to all of you who submitted your details without my having to run around like crazy. THANKS!! Also a big thank you to Gail for
the extra time and energy invested in getting this ready in time and for making it available on-line, something we in the Minhal can be very proud
of.
This is the first reminder that ALL 12th grade pupils are tested according to the OLD FORMAT (forms, etc.) Pupils taking the Summer Modular Bagrut are
tested according to the new format (see NBA handbook)
Shalom for now

17/11/2003
Dear REEDers Shalom
I have received two queries connected to dictionary usage.
1. Can a pupil who has been assessed and is taking the written bagrut exam
orally ask the tester the meaning of a word? YES!! - if he
does not understand a word he can ask the tester to look it up for him in the
dictionary.
2. It has been brought to my attention that a school does not allow pupils in
grade 8 to use a dictionary. We know that the earlier one starts to practice the
easier it becomes.
All the best

This is a reminder that on Tuesday December 23 (at 10:00), we will be
holding the second session of our series on "The Educational Legacy of
Korczak" Like the previous session it will be held at the Ministry
building in Tel Aviv and we will be hosting Shlomo Nadel (one of the very few
graduates of the orphanage. In the orphanage Shlomo's hobby was photography and
miraculously managed to save some of his photographs. His riveting story will be
accompanied by the photgraphs he took - a session not to be missed!!)
For those who missed session number 1, this is a reminder that we will make it
up to you at a later stage. Pre-registration will be required so that we
can cater for the occasion.
Yours sincerely, Marsha and Avi

We had registration forms but I somehow feel that not everyone bothered to fill

Dear REEDers
This is an urgent reminder to let you know that bagrut teachers who have not
attended any of the NBA courses must do so.
The list of courses given throughout the country can be found on ETNI: http://www.etni.org/ministry/nba/courses.htm.
In a quick check-up I made in the North (Acco; Haifa; ...) none of the
participants are from the minhal. Seems VERY STRANGE to me especially as I made
certain that all the courses are available to our schools.
Please make sure that this message is received, read and .... by all
our

Dear REEDers
Any and all messages sent to the school's REED representative, must be
brought to the knowledge of ALL the English staff of the school. I am
receiving messages from teachers who are asking for information that has been
sent out and it is very unpleasant for me to tell them every time that I do not
have the time to double up. (This is one of the advantages of REED). THANKS.
To all participants of the NBA questions and answer sessions: PLEASE bring a
copy of the handbook so that you can follow the explanations. There will NOT be
any handouts (copies of the booklet, etc. ...).
This is a reminder to get your oral bagrut data in ON TIME.

Dear REEDers
I have been receiving many questions relating to bagrut and most of these
questions will be answered at the Hishtalmuyot that we will be having soon.
Please make a list of questions and bring them along to the session. Any
questions unanswered, will receive our full attention.
Schools who feel that they have 5 point native English speakers, who have
completed ALL THE NECESSARY WORK, can submit them as candidates for the winter
exam. The procedure is exactly the same as in the past - 1. submission of
essay written under test conditions (not pre-prepared) 2. letter of
recommendation. For 10th grade students, a letter of recommendation of the
school principal is to be included. (For these students the approval will be
received from the chief-inspectors office).
All of these requirements must reach my office by Monday, December 1 (faxes WILL
NOT BE ACCEPTED!!!)
Pupils should not be PROMISED that their taking the bagrut is automatic. We have
disapproved some applications in the past.
REMINDER:
The dates for our hishtalmut are as follows:
SOUTH: Sunday, November 2nd, Be'er Tuvia school - 15:30
CENTRE: Wednesday, November 5th, Ministry of Education building, Tel
Aviv (Rechov Hashlosha 2) - 15:00
NORTH: Tuesday, November 11th, Nir Haemek school-
15:00
This is an open invitation to ALL BAGRUT teachers, and teachers in general!! It
is an informative session and will deal with updated issues that are not part
and parcel of the NBA courses.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Hi all,
Something we didn't make clear in our last message about the oral bagrut forms:
PLEASE don't send in individual teacher's forms separately - it will be almost
impossible to collate the information in this way.
Each school should fill in form 1 and then attach all the forms 2 to form 1 and
send it in as ONE package - either by mail to Avi's office or to
me by email (by October 30th).
Thanks for your cooperation,
Gail

Hi
REEDers,
Since we have been having a lot of problems with our topica mailing list, we are
moving the REED list to another mail service.
On the front page of the REED website, there is a form where you can update your
details or subscribe to the new list.
Those of you who have not been receiving messages from REED lately should check
the message board on the website for updated info.
You can download the forms for the oral bagrut from the front page of our
website.
As always - if you have any questions, email me at: gail@etni.org
Wishing you all Hatima Tova,

Dear Coordinator,
I would like to clarify some instructions regarding "bagrut" exams
this
year:
OLD BAGRUT FORMAT 12TH GRADE
Your 12th grade pupils will all be taking the exams according to the old format:
Pupils can take the winter bagrut if they choose. Three, four and five
point pupils who take the winter exam will have to be tested on their oral exam
prior to their written exam. If they opt for the summer date they will be
able to take their oral exam in the spring prior to the written exam, thus
allowing more time for learning and preparation. Those taking one-point
exams do not take the oral exam, so they can take the exam in the winter and go
on to take the supplementary exam in the summer. In such a case, they will
take their oral exam (internally tested by their own teacher) prior to the
written exam.
NOTE: ALL WRITTEN EXAMS ARE PRECEDED BY THE APPROPRIATE ORAL EXAM.
NEW BAGRUT FORMAT 10TH - 11TH GRADE
Tenth and eleventh grade pupils are eligible to take module A from this winter.
We recommend that you and your staff give serious thought to your school policy
regarding the dates for each module.
More written information (bagrut) will be sent to you and your schools soon. ALL
bagrut related questions will be answered at the Hishtalmut (North Nir Haemek;
Centre Ministry building, Tel Aviv; South Bear Tuvia)

Dear REEDers Shalom
All beginnings are new and a challenge for what the future days, weeks,
months, ... hold in store. This year for the first time HADRACHA has been
cut to hurting point, maybe even beyond that. The decisions are top-down and
so there is very little that can be done to change the situation. Will we
have madrichim? How many?? Where??? as of when???? so many questions and
still no answers. At the office we are trying to present the schools with a
program of organized hadracha (English) through "Haktza'a Yeshira"
Not all
schools have received a day and we are trying different combinations. Please
inform your principals that there is NO OFFICIAL HADRACHA for ENGLISH this
year!!
I will be compelled to do more work on-line from the office and you will be
informed as to when I will be in Tel Aviv. Communication between schools and
the Inspectorate (me) must be more efficient and the Merakzim will have to
keep in close contact, answering all my requests promptly, short and to the
point. A letter to the schools (principals) will be sent out probably
beginning of next week when we know more or less how the picture looks.
You
are always welcome to send me comments, requests, constructive criticism,
etc., to my email. It is at present tsuravi@hotmail.com
but will
probably change soon and when it does you will be notified. With all
this
done and said
I take this opportunity to wish you all (teachers and students), a good
year, one of peace and quiet.
Shana Tova

Translation Teachers Course at Tel
Aviv University
For the 15th time, the once-a-week course at Tel Aviv University will be
preparing English teachers to introduce students to the skill or is it an
art? of translation. Offered in the 11th and 12th grades in high schools
throughout the country, the translation course prepares students for a
separate 2-point bagrut. More important, it offers insights into the
workings of English and of Hebrew, as well as an unusually broad range of
texts, styles and topics. Finally, it draws attention to the tricky
challenge of translation, and the myriad differences between Hebrew and
English.
The year-long course for teachers is offered on Wednesday afternoons (4:30
till 7:30) on the campus of Tel Aviv University. It will be taught this year
by Miriam Sheppes, a longtime teacher of translation at Beit Berl College,
who has also taught the translation course to her own high school students.
The academic advisor is Dr. Miriam Shlesinger, head of the Translation
Department at Bar Ilan University.
The course focuses on translation from English into Hebrew (the native
language of most of our students), which means, of course, that the teacher
too must have a fluent command of both languages. Material covered includes
practice in translating different types of texts, as well as systematic
discussions of typical differences between languages. In fact, 30 points of
the bagrut exam relate to students ability to analyze the problems they
encounter.
To receive a syllabus or to apply for the course (titled: Meyumanuyot
ha-Targum), please contact the Hishtalmuyot department at the School of
Education of Tel Aviv University: 03-6408466 or 6407205.
